This month, the US Surgeon General raised the alarm about America’s devastating crisis of widespread loneliness. The news advisory calls attention to “the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection in our country.”

In response to this epidemic, the local non-profit Interfaith Caregivers (IVCG), is working to bring elderly residents together in community gatherings. The latest event is called “the senior garden experience”. During the past six months, three dozen greater New Haven seniors have met and helped create a public artwork, which will be unveiled May 20.

Participating seniors will be recognized May 20 for their work and IVCG’s newest initiative, Connecticut Garden Collaborative, will be launched. IVCG’s first artist-in-residence, Doug Jones, will be onsite to unveil the original artwork. Doug and IVCG Director Dan Camenga will be available for interviews. After the morning’s public event, lunch will be served and local seniors will then tour three local public gardens thanks to transportation sponsor, Mary Wade | Chatham Place at Mary Wade.

This event is part of “Go Public Gardens Days!” events, organized by the American Public Gardens Association, May 12-21.
