How Art and Culture Enriches Our Lives

Research shows that Art and Culture increase seniors’ well-being, improve memory, and even support cognitive function. They can also lower stress levels and support positive social connections. The Arts also provide plenty of opportunities to help us get out and about, make new friends, explore new ways of thinking…and have a ton of fun in the process!

Chatham Place, located in New Haven, Connecticut, has a thriving Arts and Culture scene that helps residents experience all of these benefits. Our enriching location is one reason Chatham Place at Mary Wade is such a sought-after retirement community.

In this blog, we’re breaking down a few of the many Arts and Cultural events in New Haven.

New Haven Arts Council- Something for Everyone!

Whether you like creating art yourself or enjoying the work of talented artists and musicians, The Greater New Haven Arts Council offers a wide range of enriching programs just for you. The organization helps you develop your existing hobbies or explore some new ones– there is something for everyone! They offer classes, workshops, and events in a wide range of mediums, including drawing, painting, floor weaving, drama, photography, animation, writing workshops, bookbinding, sewing, and much more. The organization also hosts events such as open mic nights, music, and art showings. The best part? Their ever-changing calendar ensures that there’s always something to get excited about.

Festivals

Chatham Place Residents also enjoy vibrant festivals. A resident favorite is the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, hosted on Yale’s campus. In early to mid-June, this festival offers more than 150 events for the community to enjoy, ranging from plays to concerts to photo walks and more.

Another noteworthy festival is the Black Wall Street Festival which takes place at the end of August. The community comes together to enjoy great food and support incredible artists of all mediums.

Music and Theatre

If music and theatre are up your alley, you are in luck! New Haven has many theatres that offer a range of award-winning plays and musicians. Chatham Place residents enjoy College Street Music Hall, which has a long performance history, starting back in 1926 as a movie theater and later as a concert hall. These days, you’ll find incredible musicians and bands sharing their sounds with New Haven nearly every night of the week. No matter what you listen to, you’re likely to find it here!

Long Wharf Theatre was founded on the idea that New Haven should be able to create its own art. It features a wide variety of talents.

Residents also enjoy the Schubert Theatre, which performs legendary Broadway shows. This historic organization has been opening its doors to audiences for more than 100 years and countless famous actors have donned its stage as well.

Museums, Galleries, & Collections

If museums and galleries are more your speed, consider a trip to Beinecke Rare Book &  Manuscript Library, which houses one of the largest collections of rare books and manuscripts in the world.

NXTHVN is a unique combination of gallery and education. It connects with local creatives to provide them with the support and space they need to do amazing work! Throughout the year, it hosts events featuring artworks and even offers fellowships and apprenticeships for interested artists.

Or, perhaps you are in the mood to take a “world tour” right from historic New Haven? If so, The  Yale University Art Gallery offers more than 300,000 pieces and offers visitors a chance to “travel the world” as they look at photos, sculptures, paintings, and more.
