A Day in the Life of Assisted Living

Oct 13, 2021 | About Us

If you or a loved one have been considering moving to assisted living, you may wonder: what does a typical day look like?

“That’s an easy answer: there are no typical days in assisted living,” says Ann Zak, Executive Director of Chatham Place at Mary Wade, New Haven County’s newest and preferred senior living community. “Every day is designed by the individual resident based on their preferences, dreams, goals and favorite things to do. Thanks to our engaging lifestyle, social opportunities, great location and excellent care, Chatham Place at Mary Wade provides the backdrop for great adventures – starring you!”

What Is Assisted Living?

An assisted living community is a type of retirement community where individuals who require a little additional help to live on their own can enjoy an engaging lifestyle with delicious dining, transportation, socialization opportunities, activities and events, and so much more. At the same time, they receive assistance they may need for activities of daily living (ADLs), such as medication management, dressing assistance, bathing, physical therapy and more.

Residential care is tailored to the individual care needs of each person, which is why there’s no such thing as a “typical day” for an assisted living resident.

A Day in the Life of an Assisted Living Community

Although there is no typical day, there are similarities that are shared among residents in an assisted living community. Here is a general overview of what someone could expect when they move to an assisted living community.

Depending on the person’s level of care, a resident may wake up to their care team member who has arrived to help them perform their morning duties like using the bathroom, showering or getting dressed. If the person has medical care needs, the team member will make sure that medication is administered. Then it’s time for breakfast down in the dining room, where the person can enjoy spending time with friends over a delicious, made-from-scratch meal designed by the on-site chef.

After breakfast, residents can enjoy a variety of activities and classes, such as lifelong learning, spiritual activities or fitness classes. Or they can go back to their room and read a book or quietly spend time alone – it’s their choice! The goal of assisted living is to provide opportunities for each individual to do the things they love and want to do while also helping them live as independently as possible. After lunch is served, there are still more activities and events to choose from because assisted living communities offer everything from off-campus excursions to art classes and more.

Dinner is usually a lively event, followed by an evening activity that the whole community can enjoy. It could be a concert from a visiting school, an outing to see a play from the community center or a movie night (complete with popcorn) at the community. Then it’s off to bed to get rested for a new, adventurous day tomorrow.
